OVER & NETHER COMPTON MEMORIAL HALL

NEWS

June 2026

The month started with the first 100 club draw of the new club year taking place during the coffee morning, which for a change was held on the first Saturday of June. The hall was packed and we had a full table of 'bring and buy' items together with our new jigsaw 'puzzle exchange' which were both very popular. Nicky Murdoch came and gave a fascinating talk about the BOWRA Foundation, a charity supporting people living with the effects of brain injury or stroke, which the hall committee have decided to support as our 'Charity of the Year' this year. Congratulations go to the winners of the 100 club draw which were 91 (£200), 95 (£100), 9, 52 and 7 (each winning £50). One winner immediately donated their winnings to the BOWRA Foundation - thank you so much.

May 2026

This month we held our annual Spring Quiz night with a number of teams battling it out for the coveted trophy. It was a very tight contest and we had all learned some interesting facts by the end of the evening. Thanks to Shaun Rusk for being a great quiz master again.

We also launched a photgraphic competition to find some photos on the theme of ' Comptons Village Life'. All village residents are welcome to enter with the age groups for entries 5-6yrs, 7-9yrs, 10-12yrs, 13-17yrs, 18yrs and over. The winning photographs will be enlarged onto canvas and displayed in the hall. The closing date for entries is 5th September. For more details email the hall.

April 2026

April was an incredibly busy month. We started with a visit from the Easter Bunny and his helpers who helped create a fun morning on Easter Saturday. There were some amazing easter bonnets created by the many children who attended, as well as face painting, egg and spoon races and the Easter Egg hunt. Every child found at least one egg and they all seemed to go home very happy.

A week later we had a fascinating talk by Heather Cottrell recounting her time at an animal rehabilitation centre in Borneo. She gave us all a real insight into life in Borneo and how she had raised a baby Orangutan to the point where it would be able to live in the forest. During the interval a traditional Malaysian curry was served and the whole afternoon was very much enjoyed by all.

Later in the month we hosted another National Theatre screening. This time it was "The Audience" with Helen Mirren as Queen Elizabeth II looking back at meetings with twelve of her prime ministers over the period of her reign. It was a witty, poignant and brilliantly acted look at political life.

March 2026

March saw the final 100 club draw of the draw year at the March coffee morning. Winners were numbers 37 (£200), 49 (£100), 11, 32, and 15 (each winning £50), many congratuations to all. If you would like to have a number in the new draw year please contact Lynn Carter.

February 2026

This month the hall was anything but quiet with showings of three England Six Nations games on the big screen. Sadly after England's fine start in their match against Wales further games were a bit disappointing. It was great to have fans of all ages joining us to watch the matches.

December 2025

We started the month with a concert by our newly formed 'Comptons’ Choir'. The event was wonderful despite a few early nerves and the audience were entertained with a range of classic Carols, Christmas songs and readings. It was followed by glasses of bubbly for all and a chance to meet our amazing choir leader Hannah O’Toole-Thrower who, with incredible enthusiasm and patience, had worked wonders in such a few weeks. The choir are all looking forward to the new year and the challenge of new songs to learn.

Finally in December we held our traditional Christmas drinks party where everyone was welcomed with a glass of Christmas cheer and a selection of delicious canapés kindly provided by our fabulous ‘Helping Hands’ volunteers. The bar remained open all evening and much merriment was had by all until rather late!

November 2025

November started with the first of two coffee mornings and was our usual first Thursday of the month affair. We served delicious homemade cakes and hot drinks and everyone had a chance to catch up with friends and neighbours.

Next was our annual quiz with teams competing for the 'Compton’s Quiz Cup'. Scores were quite close for a number of rounds and it was neck and neck by the time the fish and chip supper arrived. Eventually ‘A Bridge Too Far’ were declared winners, a very well done to Peter Hill and his team. Huge thanks go to our super quiz master Brian Foster for devising such an interesting and challenging quiz and for keeping us all in order.

A wonderful Sunday afternoon was had by all who attended “Behind Enemy lines” a production organised through Dorset Artsreach. It was very skilfully acted and presented by Louise Jordan and had lots of audience participation and interaction. It was topped off with tea and a selection of lovely homemade cakes.

At the end of the month was our second coffee morning and first Christmas event which was scheduled slightly earlier than usual (due to a large number of private bookings in December, including a wedding). Nevertheless the hall was packed with residents and guests enjoying festive treats, hots drinks, a bring and buy stall, the third 100 club draw of the year and the 'big' raffle with some fabulous prizes.

Winners of the 100 club draw were numbers 64 (£200), 55 (£100), 71, 12 and 100 (each winning £50) - congratulations and a very merry Christmas to all.

October 2025

The month started with the Macmillan Coffee morning. Ros's previous efforts at the Griffin's Head were always going to be a hard act to to follow but the event was extremely successful with over £1500 being raised for this very worthwhile charity. Huge thanks to everyone who contributed by baking cakes, and making jams and pickles and especially to those who came on the day and donated so generously.

The month ended with our Halloween family party attended by young and old with music and games and some interesting and creative costumes on show. Much fun was had by all and a variety of witches, ghouls and skeletons made their way home very tired at the end of the evening.

September 2025

Our first coffee morning after the summer was held on a slightly damp morning but spirits were lightened by the 100 club draw. The lucky winners were 48 (£200), 10 (£100), 39, 90 and 49 (each winning £50) - many congratulations to all.

The hall was at full capacity for the National Theatre showing of Inter Alia, a powerful and emotionally challenging production with a standout performance by Rosamund Pike. A further National Theatre screening is planned for the spring.

August 2025

The lovely August sunshine was in full force for our annual Summer Lunch Party. Crowds of villagers enjoyed a delicious lunch of cold meats, salmon, quiche, eggs and a wonderful range of salads. This was followed by some very indulgent puddings. We held a raffle in aid of our charity of the year, 'Supporting Wounded Veterans' and were delighted to raise around £100. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this such an enjoyable event.
